Most self-storage operators rent month-to-month with no minimum and no maximum. You can rent for as little as 1 month or as long as decades — many renters keep units for years without thinking about it. Forward Storage’s policy: true month-to-month, no long-term contracts, no minimum stay, 30-day cancellation notice when you’re ready to vacate.

Minimum rental length

At Forward Storage and most major operators: 1 month minimum. You pay for at least 30 days even if you only need the unit for a week or two.

Some operators advertise “rent for as little as 1 day” but this is usually a promotional gimmick — read the fine print and the lease almost always specifies a 1-month minimum.

If you need genuinely short-term storage (less than 30 days), you’re often better off using a moving truck rental for the duration of the move rather than a storage unit.

Maximum rental length

There’s no maximum. The typical breakdown of how long people rent:

  • 0-3 months: ~30% of renters (moving, temporary needs)
  • 3-12 months: ~35% of renters (transitions, downsizing, seasonal)
  • 1-3 years: ~20% of renters (long-term storage, slow downsizing, business inventory)
  • 3+ years: ~15% of renters (often forgotten or settled-into “permanent” storage)

Many renters keep units for 5+ years. Forward Storage has customers who’ve been with us since the property opened.

True month-to-month vs. annual contracts

True month-to-month (what Forward Storage offers):

  • No annual contract
  • Cancel with 30 days’ notice
  • No early-termination fee
  • Pricing can increase periodically (typically once per year, with 30 days’ notice of the increase)

Annual contract (some operators push this):

  • Commit to 12 months upfront
  • Often offered with a small discount (5-10% off monthly rate)
  • Early-termination fee if you leave early
  • Less flexibility if your needs change

Forward Storage doesn’t push annual contracts. Our standard pricing is the same whether you stay 1 month or 5 years.

How notice works when you vacate

To cancel: give 30 days’ written notice (email or written form). At end of the notice period, vacate the unit, sweep it out, and remove your lock. Your last month is prorated only if you vacate before the month’s end (we don’t charge for unused days in your final month).

You do NOT need to give 30 days’ notice in advance — you can give 30 days from “today” at any point.

Pricing increases over time

Storage unit rates typically increase once per year, usually by 5-10%. This is industry-standard and reflects increasing operating costs, property tax increases, and market-rate adjustments.

You’ll get 30 days’ written notice before any rate increase. You have the right to vacate (with 30 days’ notice) if you don’t accept the increase.

Forward Storage’s policy: transparent annual rate review, written notice 30+ days in advance, no surprise increases.

When to actually vacate

People often keep storage units longer than they should. Worth checking annually:

  • What’s actually in there? If you haven’t accessed it in 6 months, you’ve forgotten what’s stored.
  • Is what’s in there worth the rent? Annual storage cost ÷ value of contents = real-cost ratio. If you’re paying $1,500/year to store $500 of stuff, declutter.
  • Could you sell/donate instead? Often the answer is yes, especially for furniture you’ve moved past.

We don’t push customers to vacate — but we’d rather you make the right call for your situation than auto-renew forever.

Frequently asked follow-ups

Can I pre-pay for 6 or 12 months? Yes — many customers prepay 6 or 12 months. Some operators offer small discounts for prepayment. Forward Storage accepts prepayment but doesn’t offer a standard prepay discount (our standard pricing already includes the new-customer 50% promo for the first 2 months).

What if I miss a payment? Most operators allow 5-30 days’ grace before late fees, then late fees accrue, then auction process begins after 60-90 days unpaid. Forward Storage’s specific terms are in your lease — but the short version is: don’t go more than 30 days unpaid without contacting us, and we’ll work with you.

Can I get a refund if I vacate early in a month I’ve paid for? Yes — Forward Storage prorates the final month. You’re not charged for days after you vacate (provided you’ve given 30 days’ notice).

Is short-term storage cheaper per day than long-term? No — pricing is monthly. Short-term storage often costs more per day in absolute terms because you pay the full monthly rate.
